IWM Duxford

Duxford Imperial War Museum
Part 1: Air Assault

With the upcoming launch of Iron Maiden for Team Yankee, the team here at Battlefront Europe decided it would be a great idea to get out and about and see some real life examples of the miniatures we are all excited to be using on the tabletop.  Armed with a camera, some reference books and a big thermos of coffee Matt & Adam set off to Duxford Imperial War Museum to see what they could learn.

The Imperial War Museum Duxford is a branch of the famous Imperial War Museum organisation based on the location of the historic ‘Duxford Aerodrome’, a site originally operated by the RAF during the First World War.  During the Second World War Duxford played a prominent role in the Battle of Britain with the hangars used during the operation still housing aircraft to this day.  Duxfords collection extends to over 200 aircraft along with military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels.

Matt and Adam were on the lookout for aircraft and vehicles that are featured in Iron Maiden and their first stop was the impressively filled “Airspace” hangar filled with iconic aircraft such as the remarkable Spitfire and an early non-commercial Concorde.  When they stopped in they couldn’t miss the distinctive profile of one of Iron Maidens most exciting releases, the Hawker-Siddeley Harrier.

Iron Maiden  The ‘Harrier Jump Jet’ as it is fondly called was the first aircraft designed with vertical take-off capabilities.  A ground attack aircraft armed with a 30mm Aden Cannon and BL-755 Cluster Bombs, the Harrier is a fearsome opponent that is represented in Team Yankee by its impressive 3 dice with an anti-tank value of 7 (or 8 with cluster bombs) meaning that your opponents will only be saving most of the time on the roll of a 6.  A ‘Harrier Close Support Air Flight’ starts at 5 points and will give you 2 of these great aircraft to ensure air superiority over your opponents.

After the Harrier Matt & Adam headed off in search one of Iron Maidens most formidable foes, the Lynx.  A versatile helicopter able to be deployed as a troop transport or a tank hunter the Lynx is known for its phenomenal speed (it still holds the helicopter speed record) and agility provided by its unique rotor blades.

Nicholas, a volunteer at Duxford, took some time out of his day to speak with us about the lynx and allowed us a closer look, even allowing the Lynx to be trusted with some special cargo (see below).

In your games TOW Lynx cost 3pts a piece and come armed with the US improved TOW missiles which make light work of enemy tanks from afar with its 48”/120cm range.  This range and solid firepower allow you to hug terrain whilst you hunt the enemies valuable targets.

The Lynx is available now as part of the ‘Charlie’s Chieftains’ box which comes with 2 lynx helicopters and 5 infamous Chieftains.

Duxford had plenty more on offer, be sure to check back later when we’ll have a look at a couple of the land vehicles on display.
