On Sunday April 07th 2019 was held a very exciting tournament in France, at Abbeville, for Team Yankee. The Tournament was hosted by Mathieu Chaumont, at MAXIREVES, a great local game store full of Battlefront products and housing a giant room which can be filled with dozens of battle boards to play Flames Of War, Fate of A Nation, ‘Nam or Team Yankee.

An excellent venue, very convenient to spend a great day playing toy soldiers, which can easily be combined with a field trip in La Somme Bay, a lovely natural reserve of France.

16 French and Belgian players competed on a Spring Day, with armies of 70 points, during 3 rounds of 2 and half hours, on regular 180 x 120 cm boards.

NATO (and especially France) was favored by players, yet a variety of Nations and different builds/playstyles were represented: French (4), Soviets (4), Americans (3), West Germans (2), British (2), Netherlands (1).

Scenarios played were : Free For All, followed by Breakthrough, and eventually No Retreat, using, of course, More Missions (and its delightful and balanced Victory Conditions).

The 70 points limit offered great challenges in lists building, meaning players did have to make choices on what they want to bring to complete the missions. Added to the timing of the day and of the battles offered intense games, where commanders decisions had to be sharp, leading to situations where taking risks was well often rewarded and mistakes harshly fatal – just like what you would expect in a 1985 battlefield! Team Yankee is an absolutely stunning game in that purpose, and these specifics fit the game perfectly.

The tournament hosted veterans, experienced, and new players, where the tradition of “gentleman-ship” of French events was once again proved solid: lots of experience sharing, post-battle advices on list buildings / missions fulfilling, gaming feedback. all that in a most delightful atmosphere.

Some did play Team Yankee for the first time, some got back in the game after a long period of inactivity, while others are regular players gaming every month (or week !).

From a gaming perspective, the very good and potent French armies faced cunning opponents who managed to keep them away from the top ranks, the West Germans and their high risk taking playstyle proved more than ever that mobility is key in Team Yankee, the “tournament-fitted” Americans were actually a little bit of a disappointment (notably one massively impressive US Huey/LAV combo), while the British and Netherlands infantry-based forces proved that solid infantry blocks can achieve a lot while well-manned. Soviets did struggle with high points / low efficiency MBT compared to low points / high efficiency BMP / Hinds, and balance in list building vs missions completion is complex to find.

We did use the 8-1 victory points system from FOW V4 which was very useful in such event of 1 day. The results were tied until the end, where 4 players were competing for the podium, yet a 5th one emerge to “submarine” the 1st place! Everything is possible, it’s only over when it’s over, that’s the marvel of the Battlefront games.

1st Place: Pierre Alain “Submarine” Lebreton / West Germans / 18 points (2 wins / 1 loss)

2nd Place: Fred “TY rusty” Oz / British / 17 points (2 wins / 1 tie)

3rd Place: Seb “Lucky Hand” Pohl / West Germans / 14 points (2 wins / 1 tie)

A massive thank you for Mathieu Chaumont and his crew for hosting the event, and to Romain Pierre Conneau for animating the day. And many thanks to Battlefront and Ulyssis Miniatures for providing the prizes. See you soon in MAXIREVES Abbeville for another great day of Team Yankee!
