LANDJUT 2022 Wrap-up!
With Liam Ash-Collins

After a hiatus in 2021, the first weekend of October saw Amager Miniature Wargamers return with another edition of LANDJUT – the second instalment of our WWIII tournament. Due to the strategic position of Denmark in the Baltic, the threat of Soviet invasion and nuclear holocaust is something most people of 40+ years of age recall vividly. So, returning to a Cold War-era wargame is a popular choice for players.

LANDJUT 2022

The format was again 3 100-point games over the course of a day, with mission selection according to the Battle Plan matrix. We were lucky to have 8 players participate throughout all games and got a great buzz going.

It was noticeable that there had been a pandemic in the intervening years – most players were rusty with the rules and missions, but the format of the event is very easy-going and forgiving, so it remains a great event for both first-timers and grizzled veterans.

The rustiness may though, on more than one occasion, have resulted in less-than-optimal tactical decisions on behalf of yours truly!

To give you a taste of the atmosphere, I’ll show you a few picks from the games of the day:

… and are promptly punished for being in such an exposed position!

Meanwhile, the rest of the East German Panzer Battalion push on the opposite board edge, taking withering fire underway.

The next game saw the same “Danish” force defend against a large Czech force on a heavily packed urban table.

LANDJUT 2022

On the next table, a Polish Panzer Battalion advance supported by a Soviet Shock Formation, about to brave a minefield (with disastrous results for the Soviets).

LANDJUT 2022

More East German Panzers and BTR-60-mounted infantry advance through the city centre.

LANDJUT 2022

A Czech armoured group advances across open desert…

LANDJUT 2022

Opposed by light British armour and Mech Infantry in a forested area.

LANDJUT 2022

East Germans face off against the French in a Free For All, and vainly attempt to seize the initiative against the high-volume mid-AT output of the light French armour…

LANDJUT 2022

Whilst the French Gunslingers strike the rear areas and hammer the Gaskins before they can respond.

Overall, we had a great time with lots of fun games and eye-watering dice rolls. Huge shout-out to Battlefront and the Danish store Snydepels who were kind enough to sponsor prizes for our best generals, and almost everyone could take home some form of prize. Personally, I made do with the prize of hard-earned experience!

We had set 3 hours of game-time for each game which proved difficult to keep, especially due to mission generation and deployment and some missions’ objectives not unlocking before turn 6. For next year, we’ll have to make some form of change to remedy this, by reducing points or extending the duration of the event. Probably the latter!

That’s all from us for now, see you next year, and get in touch if you’d like to join in!
