The Book

WWIII: Nordic Forces Spotlight
The Soviet high command had a number of wartime plans for Finland. Some involved the invasion and conquest of the whole of Finland, with Helsinki, Vaasa, and Oulu as the primary Soviet objectives and even involved the use of Finland as a launch point for the invasion of Sweden. Other plans varied between limited offensives, allowing Finland to maintain its neutrality, or requests for access to Finnish territory for troop movements.

However, the Soviet Union’s main goal was the domination of the Norwegian Sea and Northern Norway to support the free passage of its Northern Fleet into the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. For this, they initially demanded the Finns give them free passage across Lapland for Soviet northern forces attacking Norway. When the Finns refused, the Soviets instead attacked through Lapland towards Norway.

Other Soviet forces also attacked southern Finland, tying down the bulk of the Finnish Defence Forces around their main population centres.

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (Plastic) (TGBX14)
From 1970 Norway’s front line tank was the Leopard 1. These were stationed in the north of the country where the most likely threat of Soviet attack would be directed.

Though not as heavily armoured as the Soviet tanks they potentially faced, the well-trained Norwegian crews combined with the excellent 105mm L7 gun give the Leopard 1 good odds against T-55 and T-62 tanks, and with the capability of taking on T-72s with good use of concealment and movement.

NM135 or NM195 Platoon (TNOBX01)
The NM135 stormpanservogn is rebuilt on the M113 chassis, modified to add a turret on the right side. The turret is armed with a 20mm Rheinmetall autocannon. The NM135 carried an anti-tank group, a machine-gun group, the deputy section leader, and the reserve vehicle commander — who took over when the section commander dismounted from the vehicle commander’s position.

NM142 Anti-tank Troop (TNOBX02)

NM142 Anti-tank Troop (TNOBX02)
NM142 is a Norwegian missile tank-hunter vehicle (Rakettpanserjager) based on the M113 APC. The NM142 mounts a turret containing a TOW guided anti-tank missile system, with one launch tube on each side of the turret in a concept broadly similar to the US M901. This TOW turret was developed in Norway by the Kværner Eureka engineering company.

Feltvogn Recon Troop (TNOBX03)
The Norwegian Army used a variety of light utility vehicles, or field cars (Feltvogn), the newest of which is the West German Mercedes-Benz 240GD Geländewagen.

As well as reconnaissance, some of these vehicles are used to carry and mount the Improved TOW anti-tank missile system, where it could be mounted in the rear.

M109 Artillery Battery (TUBX24)

M109 Artillery Battery (TUBX24)
Norway procured 126 M109G from West Germany. During the 1980s a program was begun to upgrade these to M109A3GN and the vehicles received, among other things, new and longer M185 155mm howitzers.

M113 Panzermörser Zug (TGBX09)
M125 Bombekastervogn (mortar vehicle) is the Norwegian variant of the M125 mortar carrier similar to the M106 bombekastervogn, but armed with a 81mm NM95 bombekaster (mortar).

The M125 81mm mortar carriers provide the Storm Troops with mobile on-call artillery. The squadron can direct fire and smoke bombardments quickly when required by the battlefield situation.

M113 Storm Group (x31 Figs) (TNO702)
A Norwegian Stormtropp (Storm Troop) is a mechanised infantry unit with the role of working in cooperation with the tanks of the armoured battalion of which they are an integral part. They are armed with MG3 machine-guns, Carl Gustav recoilless anti-tank weapons, G3 battle rifles and 66mm M72 LAW disposable anti-tank rockets. They ride in M113 armoured personnel carriers (APC, Norwegian PPK, pansret personellkjøretøy) and NM135 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV, Norwegian SPV, Stormpanservogn).

AV-8 Harrier Attack Flight (TUBX26)
The US Marine Corps adopted the British Hawker-Siddley Harrier, the famed ‘Jump Jet’, in 1971. Designated AV-8, the Harrier is a high-performance jet aircraft that is uniquely capable of vertical and short take-off and landing (VSTOL). It does this by swivelling its exhaust nozzles down to allow it to take off vertically.
