Afgantsy in Team Yankee
The Afgantsy Air Assault Battalion Digital Briefing

The war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, as depicted in Team Yankee, breaks out in the middle of the real-life Soviet-Afghan War.

The new digital briefing for an Afgantsy Air Assault Battalion allows you to field elite veterans of this conflict – the airborne troops of the Воздушно-десантные войска (Vozdushno-desantnye voyska, 'Air-landing Forces') or VDV for short – and extends their real-life history by bringing them into Europe as an air-assault spearhead force.

The Soviet military leadership would use these veterans to conduct air assault operations to support the tank forces penetrating NATO forward positions. The North German Plain is ideal tank country. Open, gently rolling countryside interspersed with small villages and woods. Unfortunately, it also abounds with rivers flowing into the North Sea. If the bridges over these are blown (or even defended), these rivers are a major obstacle to a rapid advance. Soviet doctrine requires that crossings be captured ahead of the main forces so that the advance can continue unhindered. The task of capturing the bridges falls to the desantniki of the VDV.

If all goes well, the NATO defenders will be taken by surprise, the bridge secured, and the tanks’ advance unhindered. If anything delays the tanks, the desantniki can expect strong and violent counterattacks that will stretch them to breaking point as they struggle to hold on to their objective, all the while looking East, hoping to see a column of tanks coming to their rescue.

The main parts of the formation are two or three infantry companies backed up by two or three companies of Mi-24 Hind helicopters. If you like the prospect of a dozen of these magnificent aircrafy sweeping across the battlefield, all guns blazing, then the Afgantsy Air Assault Battalion is what you have been waiting for!

The Hinds are not just gunships. If you do need to move your infantry quickly (or just want a really mobile reserve) you can use them as transports as well. This could open up some interesting tactical options, especially in the late game if your opponent leaves objectives uncovered.

The infantry are similar to the BMP-mounted troops in the Team Yankee rulebook, but they have higher Courage, Skill, and Assault ratings, allowing them to make better use of the various Movement Orders and making them really nasty in close combat. Afgantsy in Team Yankee
They also have two new weapons: the AGS-17 Plamya (Flame) fully-automatic grenade-launcher, and the AT-4 Spigot anti-tank missile. Both of these are mounted on large bases like the other Soviet heavy weapon teams.

The AGS-17 is pretty amazing as a suppression weapon, having ROF 9! That and a couple of PKM teams almost guarantee that the target is pinned down before any assault.

The AT-4 Spigot missile teams also have an impressive rate of fire. Modelled with three launchers, the team has a ROF of 3 and an anti-tank rating of 19, making them deadly against anything short of an M1 Abrams in the front.

The Afgantsy Air Assault Company is equipped with such a diversity of weapons, the unit card needs a second card with the heavy weapons stats.

There is a new blister pack to add the new heavy weapons, the AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher, and the AT-4 Spigot anti-tank missile.
