The Book

WWIII: Nordic Forces Spotlight
The Soviet high command had a number of wartime plans for Finland. Some involved the invasion and conquest of the whole of Finland, with Helsinki, Vaasa, and Oulu as the primary Soviet objectives and even involved the use of Finland as a launch point for the invasion of Sweden. Other plans varied between limited offensives, allowing Finland to maintain its neutrality, or requests for access to Finnish territory for troop movements.

However, the Soviet Union’s main goal was the domination of the Norwegian Sea and Northern Norway to support the free passage of its Northern Fleet into the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. For this, they initially demanded the Finns give them free passage across Lapland for Soviet northern forces attacking Norway. When the Finns refused, the Soviets instead attacked through Lapland towards Norway.

Other Soviet forces also attacked southern Finland, tying down the bulk of the Finnish Defence Forces around their main population centres.

T-72 Tank Company (TSBX29)

T-72 Tank Company (Plastic) (TSBX29)
As soon as the Finns got their first T-72 tanks they began planning improvements to them. The first wave has seen the addition of better ammunition and improved fire control systems, combining some the the latest Western technology with tried and tested Soviet engineering. The next wave of modifications was the addition of explosive reactive armour (ERA) to improve the protection of the T-72s.

T-55AM Tank Company (Plastic) (TSBX22)
With the arrival of the T-72 tanks, the T-55 tanks were relegated to the Reserve Armoured brigades. However, after the T-55 tanks’ extensive upgrade to the T-55M, many considered it a superior tank to the unmodified T-72Ms as they arrived from the Soviet Union, with the T-55M crews out-shooting the T-72s in early exercises.

BMP 1/2 Company (TSBX02)

BMP-1 or BMP-2 Company (Plastic) (TSBX02)
Finland bought both BMP-1s and BMP-2s in significant numbers, these being the most advanced and modern vehicles available to transport and support the panssarijääkärit (armoured riflemen) in battle. Usually the infantry units ride in the BMP-1, which due to its smaller turret fitted a full squad of eight in the rear compartment, while the recon infantry and anti-tank units rode in the BMP-2, which only allowed for six passengers.

BTR-60 Transport Platoon (TSBX14)
One armoured Jäger (Jääkäri) battalion in each armoured brigade was mounted in BTR-60 8-wheeled armoured personnel carriers, while the Jääkäri Brigades in the south of Finland also had one of their four battalions mounted in BTR-60 APCs. 120 BTR-60s were delivered from the Soviet Union to Finland in 1976.

2S1 Carnation Battery (TSBX07)

2S1 Carnation Battery (TSBX07)
In Finnish service the 2s1 Carnation is known as the 122 PsH 74 (122 panssarihaupitsi 74, 122mm armoured howitzer model 1974). They bought over 60 2s1 Carnations from the Soviet Union. They are used to support the mechanised brigades of the Finnish Army.

BM-21 Hail Battery (TSBX08)
The BM-21 Grad (Hail) is a direct descendant of the famous Katyusha rocket launcher of the Second World War. The box launcher, housing four rows of ten tubes, is mounted on a Ural 6x6 truck. The BM-21 can fire fin-stabilised 122mm rockets, which can be fitted with fragmentation, chemical, or incendiary warheads, up to 16km (10 miles). 122 RakH 76, as the Soviet BM-21 Hail rocket launcher is known in Finnish Service, provides the Finns with rocket artillery.

ZSU-57-2 AA Company (TQBX03)

ZSU-57-2 AA Company (TQBX03)
Finland imported twelve ZSU-57-2 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns between 1960 and 1961. The Finnish designated the ZSU-57-2 as 57 ItPsv SU 57-2. They lack tracking and targeting radar so they only have limited utility against fast-moving strike aircraft, but can be used to defeat enemy helicopters and provide additional ground support fire.

T-55 Marksman Platoon (TFIBX01)
To replace the aging ZSU-57-2 AA tanks, the Finns fitted the British Marksman turret to the T-55 tank hull. The Marksman turret has proved to be a very accurate anti-aircraft artillery system, having a documented hit percentage of 52.44%.

It has a modern Marconi Series 400 anti-aircraft radar system and is armed with two Swiss Oerlikon 35mm anti-aircraft autocannons, giving it similar performance to the West German Gepard.

Jääkäri Platoon (x40 Figs) (TFI702)
The firepower of the armoured Jääkärijoukkue (Jäger platoon) comes from their three 7.62mm KK PKM general purpose machine-guns, backed up by the Jääkäri’s individual weapons, the 7.62mm RK 62 (a licenced copy of the AK-47) and the APILAS anti-tank rocket. For close-range anti-tank self-defence they are also armed with disposable 66 KES 75 (M72 LAW) anti-tank weapons.

81mm and 120mm Mortar Platoon (x21 Figs + x6 Mortars) (TFI704)
81mm Kranaatinheitinjoukkue, or Grenade Launcher Platoon, medium mortars provide short to medium fire support at short notice, bringing high-explosive and smoke on targets quickly and effectively. For heavier supporting fire the Finnish infantry call on the 120mm KRH heavy mortars to provide high-explosive and smoke.

The 95 S 58-61 raskas sinko is a 95mm heavy recoilless anti-tank gun. It is also referred to colloquially as Musti. The gun was developed in 1958 and it was given a new wheeled carriage in 1961.

Missile anti-tank capability comes from the American TOW (PstOhj 83) anti-tank missile systems. The improved TOW is very effective, but large and bulky.

Anti-aircraft (Ilmatorjunta in Finnish) cover was supplied by the attachment of an ITO 78 (Ilmatorjuntaohjus or Anti-aircraft Missile 78, Soviet SA-7B Grail) missile team.
