The Book

WWIII: NATO Forces Spotlight

Back in 2018, we released Free Nations as our first multi-national book for Team Yankee. It added four more nations to the roster of forces with which to play. Free Nations started as an idea to add some of the forces of the smaller NATO nations but grew into something a little more when it was suggested we add the French. The project transformed from a loose idea to do some downloadable content, into a fully-fledged book with four Western nations (well, technically five if you choose to run your ANZACs as New Zealanders).

We have now further expanded this book into World War III: NATO Forces by expanding the forces and units available to the original four choices, and have also added a fifth nation, the Belgians.

Leclerc Tank Platoon (Plastic) (TFBX10)
The Leclerc is a departure from the common theme of NATO tanks, being fitted with an autoloader and a longer-barreled 120mm gun. The autoloader is a more advanced design than those seen in Soviet tanks allowing particular round types to be selected quickly and not impeding the gun’s rate-of-fire. The 120mm smoothbore gun can fire all the standard NATO 120mm ammunition types, with its longer barrel pushing rounds out at a higher muzzle velocity and increasing its effectiveness and range.

AMX-30 Tank Platoon (TFBX01)

AMX-30 Tank Platoon (TFBX01)
The AMX-30 tanks speed and light armour, combined with the excellent CN 105 F1 105mm gun make an excellent option for rapid attacks where the enemy won't expect it. A unique feature of the AMX-30 is its coaxial autocannon which could be elevated independently from the main gun to engage helicopters.

AMX-10P Transport Platoon (TFBX02)
The AMX-10P is fully amphibious, armed with a 20mm F2 M693 autocannon and a 7.62mm NF1 machine-gun. It can also optionally mount one of the Milan firing posts from a Milan team allowing it to deal with both infantry and armour.

M270 MLRS Battery (Plastic) (TUBX25)

M270 MLRS Battery (Plastic) (TUBX25)
The Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) is a high-mobility automatic artillery system. It is made up of a twelve-tube launcher packaged in two six-rocket pods, which are mounted on a stretched Bradley chassis with excellent cross-country mobility.

AMX-10 RC Recce Platoon (TFBX05)
The AMX-10 RC is based on the same armoured chassis as the AMX-10P IFV, sharing many mechanical components. Compared to France’s NATO allies’ reconnaissance vehicles, the AMX-10 RC is rather heavily armed with a 105mm rifled gun similar to the one fitted to the AMX-30 main battle tank. The AMX-10 RC's 105mm guns can easily destroy any Warsaw Pact reconnaissance vehicles.

AMX-13 DCA AA Platoon (TFBX07)

AMX-13 DCA AA Platoon (TFBX07)
The AMX-13 DCA (Défense Contre les Avions, Anti-aircraft Defence) was developed in the late 1960s to provide forward air defence for the tank regiments. It is armed with two 30mm HS-831A autocannon mounted side by side at the front of the large two-man turret. The AMX-13 DCA turret is fitted with a search and tracking radar that can detect aircraft and helicopters and neutralise them.

VBL Patrol (TFR120)
The Patrouille d’Éclairage has two VBL light armoured vehicles. The VBL is armed with a 7.62mm machine-gun. It also carries APILAS anti-tank weapons, but these have been replaced in some vehicles by the Eryx short-range anti-tank guided missile.

VAB Transport Platoon (TFBX03)

VAB Transport Platoon (TFBX03)
The French infantry section can field the VAB 4x4 armoured personnel carrier. The VAB provides space to transport ten men and is armed with a 12.7mm (.50 cal) heavy machine-gun for fire support.

VAB T20 Fire Support Section (TFBX11)
The 20mm autocannon armed VAB T20 Section d’Appui-feu, or Fire Support Section, provides additional firepower and anti-helicop-ter cover for the infantry. The VAB T20 mounts the 20mm cannon on a rotating turret for all-round fire support.

VAB Mephisto Anti-tank Platoon (TFBX04)

VAB Mephisto Anti-tank Platoon (TFBX04)
The VAB Mephisto (VCAC - Véhicule de Combat Anti-Char) is an anti-tank vehicle that mounts the Franco-German HOT anti-tank guided missile system. This powerful wire-guided anti-tank missile is capable of knocking out any Warsaw Pact tank from outside the tank’s effective gun range.

AMX Roland SAM Battery (TFBX06)
The AMX Roland mounts the Franco-German Roland short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system on the modified hull of an AMX-30 tank. The Roland system was designed to engage air targets to provide tactical anti-aircraft protection to the armoured divisions.

Infantry Platoon (x33 Figs) (TFR712)

Infantry Platoon (x33 Figs) (TFR712)
A Section de Chasseurs is organised into three combat groups, each with seven men. Each group is further divided into a 300m team and a 600m team. The 300m team is armed with FAMAS assault rifles and anti-tank rifle grenades, while the 600m team are additionally armed with a 7.62mm NF1 machine-gun. The unit is also armed with a pair of short range anti-tank weapons, usually the 89mm LRAC (Lance-Roquettes AntiChar de 89 mm modèle F1) reusable rocket launcher, but some units are issued with the new disposable APILAS (Armor-Piercing Infantry Light Arm System) portable one-shot 112mm recoilless anti-tank weapon.

Milan Section (TFR706)
French VAB mounted infantry battalions have 24 Milan anti-tank guided missile systems available in support. Most are allocated out to the infantry units, but some are retained in the Section Antichar (Anti-tank Section) to provide a reserve or to be deployed in a concentrated group for anti-tank defence.

120mm Mortar Platoon (x3) (TFR714)

120mm Mortar Platoon (x3) (TFR714)
The Hawker-Siddley Harrier, the famed ‘Jump Jet’ could swivel its exhaust nozzles down to allow it to take off vertically. The RAF uses this capability to base the Harrier out of super-market car parks and other concealed locations close to the front, reducing the interference from Soviet aircraft and allowing a higher sortie rate than conventional aircraft.

Mistral Group (x24 Figures) (TFR716)
The Mistral SATCP (sol-air très courte portée, or very short-range ground-to-air) missile is a “fire and forget” design, with a passive infra-red seeker to lock on the heat source of aircraft targets, but has a narrow field of view to reduce the effects of decoys and interference. The system is composed of the missile with its launcher and a portable and reusable tripod firing station on which the shooter sits.

Gazelle HOT Helicopter Flight (TFBX08)

Gazelle HOT Helicopter Flight (TFBX08)
Like the West Germans, the French also mounted their HOT anti-tank guided missiles on Helicopters. Taking advantage of terrain they would move into position before launching missiles to destroy Soviet armour while their 20mm counterparts would suppress enemy anti-air assets.

Mirage 5 Hunting Patrol (TFBX09)
The Mirage 5 design re-tasked the successful Mirage III fighter into a ground attack role. The Mirage 5 fighter-bomber retained the 30mm twin DEFA autocannons of the Mirage III and is armed with BLG-66 Belouga cluster bombs for striking enemy units.
