The Book

WWIII: NATO Forces Spotlight

Back in 2018, we released Free Nations as our first multi-national book for Team Yankee. It added four more nations to the roster of forces with which to play. Free Nations started as an idea to add some of the forces of the smaller NATO nations but grew into something a little more when it was suggested we add the French. The project transformed from a loose idea to do some downloadable content, into a fully-fledged book with four Western nations (well, technically five if you choose to run your ANZACs as New Zealanders).

We have now further expanded this book into World War III: NATO Forces by expanding the forces and units available to the original four choices, and have also added a fifth nation, the Belgians.

Leopard 2A5 Panzer Zug (TGBX18)

Leopard 2A5 Panzer Zug (TGBX18)
Initially known as Leopard 2 Improved, but later designated Leopard 2A5, the new model introduced wedge-shaped, spaced add-on armour to the turret front and the frontal area of the hull sides. The new spaced armour modules are designed to defeat the jet of a hollow charge or high-explosive anti-tank round prior to it reaching the base armour.

Leopard 2 Panzer Zug (TGBX01)
The Royal Netherlands Army ordered 445 Leopard 2 tanks on 2 March 1979, making them the first export customer of the Leopard 2. Deliveries began in July 1981.
The minor differences between the Dutch Leopard 2NL and the West German Leopard 2A4 were that the Dutch version included locally produced equipment, FN MAG machine-guns and a passive night driving periscope.

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)
The Leopard 1 has been in service with the Royal Army since 1969 and has recently undergone an upgrade program, beginning in 1983. The upgrade added a new fire-control system for the gunner, applied applique armour to the turret, and fitted side-skirt armour over the tracks. The upgraded model was designated the Leopard 1-V.

M109 Artillery Battery (Plastic) (TUBX24)
Like many nations in NATO, the Royal Netherlands Army fields the American M109 self-propelled 155mm howitzer to provide their artillery support. A Veldartillerie Batterij (Field Artillery Battery) consists of a command group, six M109A2 or A3 self-propelled 155mm howitzers, and an ammunition group.
In a war situation, a field artillery battalion, with three field batteries, is attached to each armoured infantry or armoured brigade.

M270 MLRS Battery (Plastic) (TUBX25)
To improve their long-range artillery capabilities the Netherlands have purchased 23 MLRS systems from the United States. Eighteen have been immediately assigned to two batteries: 109th and 119th Field Artillery Batteries. Both batteries consisted of three firing platoons with three M270 MLRS systems each.

Gepard Flakpanzer Batterie (TGBX07)
The PRTL Pantserluchtdoel Peloton (PRTL anti-aircraft platoon) is armed with the Dutch version of the West German Gepard, known as the PRTL (pantser-rups-tegen-luchtdoelen, translating to ‘amour track against air targets’). PRTL is pronounced by the Dutch soldiers as ‘pruttel’ (meaning ‘to splutter’). The PTRL features the same 35mm Oerlikon KDA auto-cannons as the German Gepard but has locally produced smoke grenade dischargers and a different radar suite. It can be identified by its bar-type search radar on the turret rear.

YPR-765 Platoon (TDBX02)

YPR-765 Platoon (TDBX02)
The YPR-765 PRI (pantser-rups-infanterie, or armoured tracked infantry) is the basic armoured infantry fighting vehicle fitted with a turret mounting a 25mm KBA-B02 cannon and a coaxial 7.62mm FN MAG machine-gun. It has a crew of three and can carry seven passengers in the rear compartment.

M113 Platoon (Plastic) (TNBX03)
The M113's versatility spawned a wide variety of adaptations that live on worldwide and in U.S. service. These variants together currently represent about half of U.S. Army armoured vehicles. To date, it is estimated that over 80,000 vehicles in the M113 family have been produced and used by over 50 countries worldwide, making it one of the most widely used armoured fighting vehicles of all time.

M113 C&V Recon Platoon (TDU200)

M113 C&V Recon Platoon (TDU200)
The M113 C&V (Commando & Verkenning) used by the Dutch reconnaissance troops has the same origins as the Canadian Lynx. However, in the 1970s M113 C&V had its machine-gun cupola replaced with an Oerlikon-Bührle GBD-ADA turret fitted with a 25mm KBA cannon. The 25mm cannon allows them to suppress an enemy position before making their escape.

The YPR-765 PRMR is the turretless version of the YPR-765 armed with a .50 cal machine-gun and fitted with mortar ammunition racks. The 120mm mortar is the same as used by the French. It has excellent range and provides fast, accurate fire on enemy positions as needed by the company commander.

Royal Netherlands Air Force (Koninklijke Luchtmacht) helicopter crews have undergone extensive training with the Americans and as NATO goes on the attack the first Dutch Apache flights are heading into combat.
