The Book

WWIII: NATO Forces Spotlight

Back in 2018, we released Free Nations as our first multi-national book for Team Yankee. It added four more nations to the roster of forces with which to play. Free Nations started as an idea to add some of the forces of the smaller NATO nations but grew into something a little more when it was suggested we add the French. The project transformed from a loose idea to do some downloadable content, into a fully-fledged book with four Western nations (well, technically five if you choose to run your ANZACs as New Zealanders).

We have now further expanded this book into World War III: NATO Forces by expanding the forces and units available to the original four choices, and have also added a fifth nation, the Belgians.

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)
The main front-line tank of the Belgian 1st Corps is the Leopard 1BE delivered between 1968 and 1971. In 1984 the Belgians began an upgrade program to bring all of the Belgian Leopard 1 tanks up to the same standard as the West German Leopard 1A5 by adding side skirts, turret spaced armour, as well as upgrading to a completely modern fire control system and fully effective night/bad-weather vision system.

Kanonenjagdpanzer Zug (TGBX17)
The Belgians fielded eighty West German-made Kanonenjagdpanzer. Its 9cm L/40 cannon was fixed within the fighting compartment, located a little right of the centre. The gun could traverse 15° to the sides and elevate up to 15°. The Kanonenjagdpanzer had NBC protection and night-fighting ability. Its hull armour consisted of welded steel up to 50mm thick. Over the frontal arc it is resistant to autocannon and heavy machine-gun fire. Against tanks and other combat vehicles, it relies on its low silhouette and mobility for its survivability.

Gepard Flakpanzer Batterie (TGBX07)

Gepard Flakpanzer Batterie (TGBX07)
The Belgian version of the Gepard anti-aircraft tank is identical to the West German version. The Gepard is armed with two 35mm Oerlikon autocannon, each gun fires at 550 rounds per minute. In a normal engagement, 20 to 40 rounds are fired at a single target.

M109 Artillery Battery (Plastic) (TUBX24)
The Belgians equip their self-propelled artillery with the reliable and effective M109 self-propelled 155mm howitzer. These provide the brigades with supporting indirect fire. A bombardment of high-explosive shells can be brought down quickly on enemy troop concentrations or dug-in positions, or to obscure the movement of friendly troops with smoke.

Scorpion or Scimitar Troop (TBBX03)

Scorpion or Scimitar Troop (TBBX03)
The CVR (T) series of vehicles are small, highly mobile, air-transportable armoured vehicles designed specifically with the reconnaissance role in mind. The Scimitar is one of the main variants to serve with the Belgian Army. It mounts a highly effective 30mm Rarden autocannon in a fully traversable turret.

Spartan or Striker Troop (TBBX04)
The Stormaanval Troep (Assault Troop) provide the reconnaissance squadron with their own infantry platoon. This small platoon is ideal for clearing buildings and terrain not accessible to vehicles.
The CVR (T) series also includes the Spartan APC. The Spartan is a small armoured personnel carrier (APC) that can carry seven men; a crew of three, and four passengers in the rear compartment. Each Spartan carries an infantry team.

YPR-765 Platoon (TDBX02)

YPR-765 Platoon (TDBX02)
Like the Dutch, the Belgians use a variant of the US AIFV (Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle), a development of the M113. The Belgian variant was designated the AIFV-B. The AIFV-B-C25, like the Dutch YPR-765, is fitted with a turret mounting a 25mm KBA cannon and a coaxial 7.62mm machine-gun. It has a crew of three and can carry seven passengers in the rear compartment.

M113 Platoon (Plastic) (TNBX03)
The M113's versatility spawned a wide variety of adaptations that live on worldwide and in U.S. service. These variants together currently represent about half of U.S. Army armoured vehicles. To date, it is estimated that over 80,000 vehicles in the M113 family have been produced and used by over 50 countries worldwide, making it one of the most widely used armoured fighting vehicles of all time.

The Belgian infantryman is armed with a FN battle rifle, a semi-automatic weapon in 7.62mm calibre. This powerful weapon is longer and heavier than the American M16, and packs more punch. Supporting firepower is provided by the 7.62mm FN-MAG general purpose machine-gun. The platoon is also equipped with LAW disposable anti-tank weapons for defence against tanks and the unit is also equipped with a Blindicide anti-tank team. This Blindicide is a Belgian development of the US Bazooka. They are also equipped with a 60mm mortar to provide further fire support.
