Leopard 2A5 Panzer Zug (TGBX18)
Initially known as Leopard 2 Improved, but later designated Leopard 2A5, the new model introduced wedge-shaped, spaced add-on armour to the turret front and the frontal area of the hull sides. The new spaced armour modules are designed to defeat the jet of a hollow charge or high-explosive anti-tank round prior to it reaching the base armour.

Leopard 2 Panzer Zug (TGBX01) Leopard 2 Panzer Zug (TGBX01)
The Leopard 2 came about from the joint German-US ‘Battle Tank 70’ program, which was abandoned after costs rose above what the West German government was willing to spend. However, out of the ashes arose a phoenix, the outstanding Leopard 2 main battle tank.

Leopard 2 Panzer Zug (TGBX01)...

Leopard 1 Panzer Zug (TGBX14)
Though lightly armoured, the Leopard 1 tank is fast and well armed, with a 105mm L7 gun that is more than capable of dealing with any scouting vehicles of Warsaw Pact. Even though the powerful Leopard 2 main battle tank is now in service throughout the panzer brigades, the Leopard 1 tank has not been retired. One of its roles is now as part of the divisional Panzeraufklärungs battalions in the schwere Panzeraufklärungs Kompanien

The armored protection of the Marder 2 was rated to withstand a 30mm AP round frontally and a 14.5mm round at all other angles. This was achieved through modular passive armour bolted on to the hull and turret which were constructed with steel.

Rob's West Germans
Rob is one of our resident rivet counters in the office, loving all things Bundeswehr. When developing Leopard he brought in a wealth of information for the team to read and review. He also brought in a rather impressive 1/6 scale remote control Leopard II that patrolled the office rolling over anything that got in its way.
