Pansarvärnspjästerrängbil 1111 (Pvpjtgb, armoured defence patrol car) was built by Volvo to suit the requirements of the Swedish army for a new all-terrain light utility vehicle. The resulting vehicle was the Volvo C303 the successor to the successful Volvo 903 Laplander, popularly known as “The Puppy”. The original 903 beat out contenders from Willys, Land-Rover and Porsche, and became a long-serving member of the Swedish army.

It was built in many versions, such as troop carrier, radio car, fire truck, anti-tank missile launcher, and as a carrier for the Pvpj 1110 Bofors 90mm recoilless anti-tank gun. As the conventional Puppy ran the risk of catching fire from the recoil flame of the 90mm recoilless gun, a special, low-profile body was developed by Volvo which made the vehicle look sportier than it was, and thus invited drivers to dangerous speeds. After a few accidents, a foldable rollbar was added. |
The Volvo Tgb 11 (Volvo C303) off-road vehicle was used as an anti-tank weapons platform for the RBS-55 iTOW and RBS-56 BILL anti-tank guided missile systems. It allowed the relatively large and cumbersome TOW or RBS-56 firing post to be moved and relocated easily, ideal in the defensive ambushing role expected of these weapons. |
