World War III: Nordic Forces - Book Spotlight
Löjtnant Lars Nilsson watched the road from the cupola of his Strv 103 S-Tank. His platoon had been positioned in a treeline waiting for the enemy to appear since the previous day.
About mid-morning the first Soviet vehicles crested a dip in the road. Nilsson’s gunner/driver, Karlsson, spotted it first, “BRDM, 1000 metres, sir,” he stated before ducking back into his hatch to take up his position.
“Enemy vehicles, 1000 metres east, on road, free fire,” Nilsson informed his platoon.
Meanwhile, Karlsson had already shot at the Soviet armoured car. The sabot projectile tore through the lightly armoured vehicle, and its smoking wreck rolled off the road into a tree.
Nilsson then saw the trees dividing a field shaking, before a tank emerged into the field.
“Tanks, 1500 metres, treeline and field,” he informed the platoon. A ripple of 105mm fire travelled down the platoon’s position.

Building a Finnish & Danish Starter Force with WWIII: Nordic Forces
With John Lee

With the launch of WW3 Nordic, I thought I would look at how a new player, or someone on a budget, could get a force on the table that would be competitive, or at least hold its own for Finnish and Danish.  For the new player, it opens the door to playing WW3 without needing to buy, assemble or paint too much and get into playing the game quicker...

Finnish Tanks in World War Three
With Ryan Jeffares

With the release of Team Yankee Nordic Forces, the Finns have once again found themselves embroiled in a World War. However, the Finns are prepared, boasting well-trained armoured forces which we will explore in this article. The Finns are equipped with a mixture of T-55 and T-72 tanks, purchased from the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1980s respectively, which they would further upgrade throughout their service...

Talvinsota will never end!

Talvinsota will never end!
With Livio Tonazzo

The legend of the Finnish infantry begins in 1939 during the so-called Winter War, or Talvinsota in Finnish. The small Finnish army offered a strenuous resistance against the Red Army, superior in men and tanks with hallucinating proportions. The Finns knew how to take advantage of their knowledge of the area, using ambush and guerrilla tactics that put the invaders in serious difficulty.  Even during the Second World War (or Continuation War), the Finns gave excellent proof of themselves, fighting on the northern front until 1945. The peace treaty that followed almost completely restored the borders to those of 1 January 1941...

T-55 Marksman: the synthesis of capitalism and socialism
With Livio Tonazzo

The new Nordic Forces is a particularly interesting book. In fact, it includes the rules for bringing the Scandinavian nations to the tables of WW3: Team Yankee. All in all, these are little-known armies, with unique and particular equipment... for this very reason, they are so fascinating! Everyone knows the Abrams and the Leopard 2, maybe someone knows the Chieftain but who has ever heard of the STRV-103 S Tank? The Finnish army, unlike the Swedish one, could not rely on its own industry to develop domestic equipment and you must therefore turn to foreign markets...

Defenders of Karelia

Defenders of Karelia
With John Lee

The Finns have a long history with Russia over territory in Karelia belonging to one or the other nation over centuries.  They also share a common 1340km border between the two countries.  To help keep their neutral stance with the Soviet Union on its doorstep, Finland ensured that they purchased much of their military equipment from the Warsaw Pact countries as well as the West and produced their own armaments.  As in World War 2, Finland planned to trade territory for time and grind down any invaders and make them pay...

Swedish Armoured Forces in Team Yankee
With Ryan Jeffares

The release of Nordic Forces has brought the war to Sweden and in this article, we’ll examine the armoured formations available to the Swedes in Team Yankee.  The Swedes made use of both imported and locally designed vehicles, notably the British Centurion and the STRV 103 S-Tank and we’ll look at their rules in game as well as tactics and some sample army lists...

The Peculiar Swedes of Nordic Forces... Bandkanon 1 & IKV-91
With Adam Brooker

Boy oh Boy! I think a lot of Team Yankee players are waiting for the Nordic Forces book to come out, and one of the most anticipated Nations is Sweden and their unique vehicles, like the Stridsvagen 103 S-Tank, with its unique design and hydropneumatic suspension, or Viggen fighter-bomber. Sweden had been neutral during WW2 which allowed them to economically bounce back quickly from WW2 where other countries that had been drawn in struggled to recover, they also had started to become more self-reliant with a strong manufacturing industry and excellent engineers...

Defenders of Gotland
With John Lee

During the Cold War, Sweden maintained that the Soviet Union was the biggest military threat to its sovereignty and kept a mass conscription system in place to ensure it could respond quickly if invaded.

The island of Gotland occupies a strategic location in the Baltic Sea and is thus considered to have a permanent garrison assigned.  The Gotland Military Command in Visby had the Gotland Brigade, an Artillery Regiment, a Coastal Artillery Regiment and an Anti-Aircraft Battalion (RBS, 20mm AA, Bofors 40mm)...

Norway's armoured might, the Leopard 1
With For Warned Forearmed

Hi all and welcome to another article from the land of ice and snow with your local S2. This time we’ll be looking at the New Norwegian Forces as part of the new Nordic release, more specifically the Norwegian Leopard 1 Formation. So at first glance of the Norwegian formations we only have 2 to choose from the Leopard 1 and the M113 Mech infantry formations, however, we’ll concentrate more on the Norwegian MBTs as these have plenty of punch when it comes to making a competitive list for WW3 Team Yankee. I will show you a more combined arms force as well for those that want to run both formations together...

The Norwegian Wolves and the Hunter
With Adam Brooker

Can you think of two things that go together as well as vegemite on toast? Or peanut butter and jelly?  I would have to think it has got to be G-Wagons and TOW missiles! Surely!!

With Norway being introduced as a faction in Nordic Forces, we get this fabulous mix in the form of the Feltvogn (Field wagon) and the NM142 Rakettpanserjager. The NM142 is the integral anti-tank section in either the Norwegian Leopard 1 Squadron or the M113 Storm Squadron. The NM142 is very similar to the US M901 ITV with either the improved TOW or the TOW-2 missile, and the Feltvogn is the Wolf G-Wagon a military version of the Mercedes G-Wagon 240GD...

NATO Quick Reaction Forces in Norway

NATO Quick Reaction Forces in Norway
With Adam Brooker

As a founding member of NATO, Norway always knew if the Cold War got Hot, that it would be one of the first targets for the Soviets, given the important Soviet naval bases and shipyards they had developed on the ice-free Kola Peninsula, the gateway to the North Sea for the Soviets...

Never Again! – The Norwegian Defence Plan
With Adam Brooker

Today I would like to talk about the overall plan that Norway had to slow the Soviets if they invaded, yes slow, they did not expect to defeat them by themselves. But they did have a plan to win eventually, so let’s have a look at it.

As one of the first signatories to NATO in 1949, Norway has always recognised that it would be one of the first targets of Soviet aggression in the case of hostilities between NATO and the Soviet Union. In return NATO has seen Norway as a cornerstone in the NATO defence plan because of its strategic location in the North Atlantic, the same reason it was invaded by the Germans in WW2...

Hi all and welcome to another article with your local S2, this time I’ll be discussing the forces from the land of Ice and snow or more specifically the Danish/ Denmark armoured formations available to you in the new Nordic book. Defenders of Jutland
With John Lee

NATO considered it vital to defend Denmark as a strategic part of their overall defence with the primary objective of blocking the Danish Straits to prevent the Soviet Baltic Fleet from breaking out to the North Sea.  LANDJUT was responsible for this defence of the peninsular and consisted of the Danish Jutland Division (Mechanised Infantry), West German 6th Panzergrenadier Division as well as various territorial commands from both nations.  The British 1st Infantry Brigade and US 9th Infantry Division would reinforce the peninsular...
